Judy Frankel, Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau

“Count on Kathryn to come up with an interesting angle to a tired topic, be thorough and enterprising in her research, and deliver a quality product on time. I think highly of her work—not only as a writer and editor, but as a reader. As a writer, she engages and informs the reader on a wide variety of subjects and as an editor, she has a keen eye for tidying up muddled phrasing. Kathryn would be an asset to any project or assignment.”

—Judy Frankel, director of communications and public relations, Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau

John Quinlan, Q Solutions LLC

“Kathryn brings an already amazingly eclectic knowledge of the world, coupled with the thoroughness of her extensive research, to any article she writes. She is someone who clearly sees the power of storytelling to effect social change. She’s detail oriented and extremely adept at making facts and figures come alive. However, it’s the personal rapport she develops with the people who are the subjects of her profiles that allows her to go far beneath the surface to discover what’s at the heart of their creativity and desire to contribute to the common good. It’s the gift of this personal approach that makes her writing so memorable, and so capable of not only changing minds, but also opening hearts, to new ways of thinking and being.”

Obed Arango, Creative Conzepts

“I have the pleasure of working with Kathryn Kingsbury and recommend her with confidence because of the quality of her work and personal character. As a professional writer, Kathryn is meticulous, creative and exacting. She constantly pursues the best way to express ideas and concepts and enhance communication. As an owner of Creative Conzepts LLC, I have hired Kathryn as a freelancer and her work has been outstanding. She has collaborated in the creation of film scripts. Working with her is easy; she listens and expresses her ideas openly and with honesty. Moreover, Kathryn is a teammate who brings her best to every project and engages well in teamwork. Our time at Geneva Global allowed us to work together, producing reports on a very short timeline and according to a tight process. Kathryn has my full endorsement as a professional, writer and person.”

Clare Cotugno, Content Manager

Dear Kathryn,

On behalf of [my company], I want to thank you for all your excellent work on [our client’s] Web site. Your willingness and ability to quickly master the [client’s] branding, as well as hundreds of pages of industry facts, went far beyond even my ambitious expectations for the writing team.

Where to begin? Your work on the style guide was impeccable. You created a comprehensive guide that included client and industry-specific details in just one weekend. Moreover, you managed the document for the duration of the build. I always knew that you were going to coordinate and resolve questions, update the guide, and keep the entire team alerted to updates. Moreover, you did it with a sense of humor and a delight for language that even the driest material and tightest deadline could not dampen. Thanks so much for keeping the mood light even when we were under stress.

Kathryn, your attention to detail was a life saver. There’s just no other way to say it. Especially during the hectic weeks of Thanksgiving through Christmas, having you on the job freed me to attend to the larger tasks of coordinating and presenting work-in progress to the developers, marketers, and the client. I knew if there were a question about contents or facts, you’d give me a call, succinctly describe the situation, propose a fix, and move on to write other sections until you heard back from me. I also knew that if I did not hear from you, all was well.

In matters as large as the global messaging of the site, and as small as the abbreviations in the charts, you gave equal attention, dedication, and talent. As a result, our client is happy, my bosses are happy, and I am keeping a sharp eye out for more work to send your way.

Sincerely,
Clare Cotugno, PhD

Portfolio

This isn’t really a portfolio. If I handed you all the work I’m proud of, you’d be buried under so many words you might never surface again.

(I counted my published words until I hit one million around 2010. Then I stopped.)

So if you think of a portfolio as an ice cream sundae, what you’ll find here are a few of the chocolate sprinkles. Intriguing, but not the whole thing.

If you don’t see a link to the type of writing you’re interested in, don’t worry. Chances are I’ve done it. Contact me for additional samples.

Feature writing

I cut my teeth as a full-time reporter and stringer in Madison, Wis. Producing up to eight articles a week for three newspapers and the occasional magazine, I reached the Holy Grail of reporting: writing both quickly and well.

And these weren’t half-assed jobs. I made my editors and fact-checkers happy with my well documented research, and my coverage of the payday lending industry was nominated for Best Investigative Story or Series in the Excellence in Wisconsin Journalism Competition of the Milwaukee Press Club.

I had a blast writing about education and communities for The Capital Times, politics and lifestyle for the weekly Isthmus newspaper, and a little bit of everything for African-American newspaper The Madison Times.

I also wrote for a number of consumer magazines, including Readers Digest, Hope, Lambda Literary Review, Wisconsin Trails, Madison Magazine, and Wisconsin Woman. Areas of focus included sustainability, human rights, and lifestyle.

Oh, and books! My work has been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul anthologies and Changing Boundaries: Best Religion News Writing.

Nonprofit communications

As an editor for philanthropic advisor Geneva Global, I produced grant prospectuses that connected nonprofit agencies on five continents with more than $10 million in funding. Later, I directed communications for the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. I boosted its social media engagement, managed email campaigns, and established editorial excellence in its publications.

Websites, email, and content marketing

As the communications manager for Ujuzi African Travel, I plan and create web and email content to encourage conservation-focused travel to eastern and southern Africa.

I’m a contributing writer to AOM Insights, an online magazine bringing business leaders the latest in evidenced-based organizational research.

I write and edit a variety of marketing pieces for WATT clients, including white papers, blog posts, brochures, branded magazines, and sponsored content.

Using my talent for plain language, I write easy-to-read web and print content to inform patients and their parents about kids’ health.

I provide the leader in B2B marketing education with content to help its own marketing excel.

Looking for the right words? I’ll find them.

I’ve rejuvenated the stale website of a $4.5 billion company, leading it to connect with new customers. I’ve found the words to bring millions of dollars in funding to non-profits on five continents. I’ve helped thousands of people understand their medical conditions and take charge of their health.

I can find the words to help you meet your goals, too.

Kathryn has helped me build, then reinvent, my travel business with beautiful, descriptive content for website and email. Her ability to write and edit accurate, compelling content—even about places she hasn’t seen—is remarkable. In fact, I often find myself saying, ‘I want to go there!’

I engaged Kathryn’s services to read over a review of a particular medical topic. Kathryn provided invaluable assistance in editing for better word choice and made several suggestions on the paper’s organization and idea development to improve readability.
